Because you have a future …
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord . ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.'”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)
Because you have a future …
We all have dreams and desires, ambitions and aspirations. All too often, though, we allow our hurts to knock them out of us; we give up on our dreams and desires, we lose sight of our ambitions and aspirations.
So here you are, today, with all your hurts, habits and hang-ups, your flaws, faults and failures. The question is, where do you go from here? What’s your future going to be? What do you hope for?
We all have dreams and desires, ambitions and aspirations. All too often, though, we allow our hurts to knock them out of us; we give up on our dreams and desires, we lose sight of our ambitions and aspirations. I don’t know whether you believe you are here by chance, or by choice; I don’t know whether you are full of faith, or drowning in doubt; we don’t know what you believe.
However, our lives are determined by what we believe; How we live our lives is determined by what we believe.
Henry Ford once said: “Whether you believe you can do a thing, or not, you are right.” The story goes that Henry Ford wanted to build his famous V8 motor engine; he chose to cast the entire eight cylinders in one block. His engineers all agreed that it couldn’t be done – it was impossible. Ford replied, “Do it anyway.” Henry Ford believed it could be done, and eventually they did!
For many years it was widely believed that it was physically impossible to run a mile in under four minutes. It was thought that:
= The human skeleton wasn’t strong enough;
= Wind resistance would be too great; or
= The human lung capacity wasn’t large enough.
But on 6th May, 1954, Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. In the following year, 37 other runners broke the 4 minute barrier; the year after 300 broke it. The question isn’t how did Roger Bannister do it, but how come so many managed it so quickly afterwards, when everyone had been trying for years and years before it was done for the first time. The answer is belief. For Roger Bannister to do it in the first place, it took faith – belief without proof. After that, it only took belief, because the proof was already there.
Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right. So what do you believe you can do? And what do you believe you can’t do? What if you were wrong? What do you put your faith in every day? What if you were wrong? Do you have faith in God? No? What if you were wrong?
Whether you are full of faith or drowning in doubt, not a single one of you can have any doubt about the existence of the Bible. Although the Bible was written between 1445 BC – AD 90’s; that’s well over 1,900 years ago; yet it’s still being published and read today. In fact, based on the number of books printed and sold over the last 50 years, it remains the bestseller by far, with 3,900 million copies sold. (The closest is ‘Quotations from Chariman Meo Tse-Tung,’ with over 820 million copies, and Harry Potter with 400 million copies sold.) According to the Gideons, over 6 billion copies of the Bible have been printed. Consider that when you realise that there are only just over 7 billion people on the plant, that’s probably one copy for every single adult on the planet.
When you consider all that, it’s worth giving some thought to what is written in it, and the Bible tells us that God says that He has plans for you! You have a future! And it’s a good future!
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord . “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
And it God has a plan for you, then you can bet it’s a good plan! Around 600 years after that was written, God sent His son – Jesus Christ – into the world, declaring that:
“His name will be the hope of all the world.”
Jesus himself declared that:
“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
Do you have life? Are you truly living a life worth living? Is your life full of love, joy, peace – in abundance? If not, do you expect your future to be any different? If not, then you need to know the Hope. You need to know the Hope there is in a life following Christ. Let your Hopes (or let the Hope), not your hurts, shape your future.
Do you want change in your life?
Do you want your future to be better than your today? Let’s face it, not everyone wants to change. Many people are happy with what they have in life, with where they are in life, and with who they are. Even those that are not happy with certain aspects of their life have accepted that’s the way things are, and settle for something less than what they dreamt of in the past; and, they carry on – plodding on from day to day, putting up with the daily grind. You see, comfort is the enemy of your dreams.
But there comes a time when some decide that enough is enough, and they want something different. What about YOU? Do you want something different? Albert Einstein described insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. No! If you want a different result, you’re going to have to DO something different.
